IN THE CRATER OF A FALLEN GIANT

Premiered by the Shorter University Symphonic Winds

For Concert Band
Difficulty: ME
This is a wonderful piece that was inspired by the Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Crater Lake was formed approximately 7,700 years ago when the 12,000ft Mount Mazama Volcano erupted explosively. This caused it to collapse and create an enormous caldera that has since filled with rain water and snow melt. This once massive volcano has created an absolutely stunning vista that is simply breathtaking.

This piece captures the feelings of the current view, as well as what it might have been like before as well as during the eruption.

This is a great piece to introduce students to asymmetrical meter as there are many rhythmic patterns that repeat throughout the piece, making the concept more accessible to younger players.

THE ANCIENTS

Premiered by The Northwest Georgia Winds

For Concert Band
Difficulty: ME
Far off lands, misty mountains, kings and knights... This piece sends your listener on a journey to a time long forgotten. Using quartal/quintal harmonies as a base, this piece has a medieval-like quality that will interest performers and listeners alike!

This is a great piece to introduce students to asymmetrical meter as there are many rhythmic patterns that repeat throughout the piece, making the concept more accessible to younger players. The open 4ths and 5ths used throughout the piece are also a great tool to teach proper intonation for those intervals.

I have 2 different recordings of the piece. One is the complete concert band orchestration of The Ancients. The other is a high quality recording with winds only using higher quality samples.

WHAT IF?

Premiered by the Campbell High School Wind Ensemble

For Concert Band
Difficulty: ME
This piece was inspired by and is dedicated to the memory of a student I taught at Campbell High School, who passed away in 2018. Jose Loredo was a tuba player. He was a wonderful student and loved playing in both the concert band as well as the marching band. Jose was always full of enthusiasm and energy. He touched the lives of many people, and I am grateful to be one of them. As one of my students, Jose continuously inspired me to look on the bright side of each day. I hope that this simple piece of music can say what my words cannot express.

THE HERO'S JOURNEY

Contact me if you would like to be the FIRST to perform this work!

For Concert Band

Difficulty: M

This multi-piece collection centers around the traditional story arc of the hero in the monomyth. In literature, the hero's journey is generally separated into three distinct stages.

I. Departure

II. Initiation

III. Return

This work aligns with the literary sections. The music itself is rich with cinematic-style writing and scoring.

I. Departure and Initiation:

Gr. 4 - 5'33"

This piece introduces the main theme, the Hero's theme, and shows the beginning of the character's journey. We experience the grandeur of the journey to get a feel for the sights the character is experiencing. We also experience the Hero's first setback at the end of this piece, as the Villain is introduced to the Audience.

II. Abyss:

Gr. 4 - 3'13"

This piece represents part II of "A Hero's Journey." The music tells the story of our Hero as they encounter many tests of strength and will.  The music conveys what our protagonist is feeling within during these internal and external struggles.

This piece can be performed as a stand alone piece, or together with part I and later, part III.

III. Return

THE CHASE

Contact me if you would like to be the FIRST to perform this work!

For Concert Band
Difficulty: E - 2.5
"The Chase" is a great piece for younger bands. It is great for teaching students the concept of the minor scale. It will help them become more comfortable with a basic melody and some of the chords found within minor keys.
Your students will really enjoy this simple piece and will have fun performing "The Chase"!
